In January 1981, Nickell was appointed 12th District state representative to fill the vacancy created when Cashmere's Rollie Schmitten was appointed state fisheries director. He then taught law enforcement at Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake and served as a chief of the Colville Confederated Tribal Police. Nickell was elected Chelan County sheriff in 1954 and served until 1974, when he retired from the post. Nickell had a history of heart problems and apparently suffered a heart attack, said his son, Hunter Nickell. ``Dick'' Nickell, Chelan County sheriff for two decades and a former state legislator, died yesterday at his home here.
